Full Description

{2} Excavation demonstrated that the central part of Area A had been quarried for ironstone and then backfilled with quarry waste. The edges of backfilled quarry pits, which corresponded to the edges of the large irregular hollows visible in the surface of the field, were evident in Trenches 3, 4, 5 and 7, where there was a distinct change between the natural substrate and backfilled material. The latter generally comprised layers of loose ironstone rubble, various clays and soil. Nineteenth and early 20th century pottery, glass and clay pipe were recovered from these deposits. It is likely that several pits may have been open at any one time and that worked out pits were backfilled with quarry waste from new pits. It is possible that the loose ironstone rubble in the bases of Trenches 5 and 8, which was recorded as being the natural substrate, may also be quarry backfill.
