Full Description

{2} Trial trenching confirmed the presence of linear ditches broadly aligned east to west and north to south, the former probably more substantial boundaries and the latter lesser field boundaries within a coherent field system. No dating evidence was recovered from the majority of the ditches, although pottery from one of the features probably dated to the later prehistoric period.

In Trench 2 a circular geophysical anomaly corresponded reasonably closely to an apparently circular, shallow ditched feature. No dating was recovered from the ditches of this feature. It appears to be too small to be a ploughed out round barrow but the dimensions are compatible with a round house, although no internal features were evident.

{3/5} Excavation of three areas within the Saxon Rise 1 development area found evidence of late Bronze Age and Iron Age settlement. Two four-post structures and a pit were dated to the late Bronze Age period by sherds of of post Deverel Rimbury plainware style pottery. The earliest phase of Iron Age activity was the creation of a field system. The remains of two Iron Age roundhouses within a northern enclosure suggests habitation was focused in this area, with waste and storage pits informing what activities took place. Later phases of activity included the remodelling of the field system.
