Full Description

{2} There was also another part to the gardens which appears to have been included from an early date. This was a long rectangular piece of land below the main garden and asymmetrically placed to it, with the medieval church in the north-west corner. In 1580 this was bounded by a wooden fence planted with trees and called The Orchard. Earthwork plan.

{3} A trial trench in this area found substantial layers of earth, probably deposited to create a terrace or platform immediately north of Church Pond. The soil layers contained a mixture of residual pottery dating from the Iron Age, Roman and medieval periods. A map of 1587 shows the edge of a terrace or path in this approximate location, although a single sherd of 19th-20th century may indicate later episodes of dumping.
