Monument record 5666/1 - Possible Post Medieval/Modern Quarry and/or Iron Age/Roman settlement
Please read our guidance about the use of Northamptonshire Historic Environment Record data.
Summary
Cropmarks of possible pits, ditches and buildings identified on aerial photographs. The cropmarks were interpreted as post-medieval/modern quarrying during the NMP project, however, geophysical survey undertaken on 2001 re-interpreted the remains as part of multi-phase Iron Age/Roman site. Subsequent geophysical survey in 2021 found evidence for modern industrial activity consistent with debris infilling; documentary evidence indicates the site has been covered by c3-4m of mounded quarry material.

Full Description
{1} Geophysical survey undertaken in 2001 identified a complex network of enclosure ditches, suggesting possible multi-phase settlement. The strength and type of anomalies revealed are suggestive of a possible iron Age/Romano-British site. A relatively large broad feature in the west of site, possibly a palaeochannel, seems to act as a natural boundary for the archaeology.
{2} Geophysical survey was undertaken in 2021. Data across the majority of the area is consistent with debris infilling, although the north-eastern corner of the field is relatively quiet and may still possibly contain linear anomalies.
