Monument record 687/5/2 - Possible Medieval/Post Medieval Ornamental Pond (Morphed Aerial Archaeology Interpretation)

Earthworks of large mounds probably part of a pond depicted on a map of 1841. Possibly part an ornamental garden feature.

{2} In the field immediately west of Westhorpe (marked 'f' on the earthwork survey plan), there are two large irregular mounds surrounded by an area of disturbed ground, and a shallow ditch or hollow way runs east from the south side of the mounds towards the village. On the Tithe map of 1841 a roughly circular pond some 60m in diameter, with a circular island within it is shown in this field. It has a narrow extension to the east which is probably the feature which now survives as a dry channel. A large building is shown immediately south of this canal, close to the existing road and the north part of the field was known as The Coombe, and the south part as Water Loggs. The pond may have been an ornamental feature, perhaps part of a garden.
