Monument record 687/5 - The Orchard (Possible Post Medieval Country House)

Geophysical survey confirmed that this area was the location of a probable post-medieval country house, ancillary buildings and gardens. The former route of the road and a possible medieval tenement was also recorded.

{1} On the Tithe map of 1841 a roughly circular pond some 60m in diameter, with a circular island within it is shown in this field. It has a narrow extension to the east which is probably the feature which now survives as a dry channel. A large building is shown immediately south of this canal, close to the existing road and the north part of the field was known as The Coombe, and the south part as Water Loggs. The pond may have been an ornamental feature, perhaps part of a garden.

{2} Gardens at Sibbertoft are cited by Morton, but not certain which gardens are referred to.

{3} Geophysical survey, comprising both magnetometry and resisitivity, identified the footprint of the 'Mansion House' as well as remains of further buildings to the north, all apparently constructed, at least partially, of brick. Associated garden features were also recorded and included a lake, waterways and perhaps walled or formal gardens. The line of the former road and adjacent medieval tenement were also recorded.
