Monument record 3320 - Castle Ashby village

Summary
In 1086, Castle Ashby appears to have been a small settlement. It had a mill and woodland. The 'castle' element of the village name was acquired in 1306 when a licence was granted to crenellate the mansion. The castle was already a ruin by the 16th century and the present mansion was begun by Henry Compton in around 1573-4. The parish church has a late 12th-century doorway, although it not clear whether it belonged to an earlier building.

{3} Some of the medieval village has been lost under the gardens of the great house, which was built in 1574 onwards on the site of an earlier 'castle' or fortified manor.
