Full Description

{1} About a 150 years later an additional map(c. 1700), now at Deene Hall, shows the subsequent enlargement of the gardens to the south where their formal arrangement terminated in the Wilderness which was created at the end of the seventeenth century.

{3} By 1666 the gardens may have been extended south of Kirby Brook and an orchard, while in 1689-92 the creation of the Wilderness up the valley slope to the south of the orchard almost doubled the length of the gardens. A century later Bridges (1791, 314) saw in the Wilderness 'almost the whole variety of English trees and ranged in an elegant order'.
