Monument record 9593 - Possible Prehistoric Activity, land near Sulgrave Road
Please read our guidance about the use of Northamptonshire Historic Environment Record data.
Summary
Cropmarks of two possible prehistoric enclosures as well as pit groups and a possible quarry pit identified on aerial photographs during the Northants NMP. A Late Iron Age ditch situated in the east was found by trial trenching. In 2024, geophysical survey was undertaken on the land off Sulgrave Road. Numerous responses of archaeological interest have been detected in the survey; Ditch-like responses, pits and trends are all visible in the survey, some of which may form enclosures, associated features and landscape divisions.

Full Description
{1} In 2024, Polyalbion Archaeology, found evidence for a Late Iron Age ditch. There was also evidence of the ditch being recut twice. In the intermediate layers of silting contained nearly 2kg of late Iron Age pottery, clearly dumped in along the ditch's southern edge. The presence and distribution of this pottery suggests occupation and a further examination of the geophysics reveals a series of low key signals further south that could indicate possible pot enclosures.
{2} In 2024, geophysical survey was undertaken on the land off Sulgrave Road. Numerous responses of archaeological interest have been detected in the survey. A ditch-like response has a 90-degree bend which could be a partial enclosure, extending southwards and westward beyond the limits of the survey. This would indicate the anomalies on the southern edge of the site could be internal subdivisions/features. A curving anomaly on the west of the dataset may also be a partial enclosure. Weaker trends across the data have been assigned to the category of Probable Archaeology; they could be landscape divisions.
