Full Description
{1} Prior to evaluation, the cropmarks of two subrectangular enclosures had been identified. Geophysical survey and subsequent trial trench excavation added further detail indicating that there were a series of interlinked subrectangular enclosures with internal features. A small amount of middle Iron Age pottery was recovered, largely from features in the western part of the settlement. A larger amount of Roman pottery, dating to the later 1st-2nd centuries, was recovered mainly from trenches in the eastern part of the site. There appeared to be a break in activity during the later Iron Age. The palaeoenvironmental information suggests that the enclosures are more likely to be livestock enclosures, although the significant amount of pottery and size of the enclosure ditches suggests a domestic focus may be more likely.
