Full Description

{3} Archaeological evaluation was undertaken in 2011-2. Well-preserved ridge and furrow earthworks were evident across the areas evaluated in Northamptonshire forming parts of two medieval open fields that were probably part of the farmlands surrounding the medieval village of Onley. The earthworks were especially prominent in the western part of the site, becoming more flattened to the east; the modern track leading to the farm followed the line of a headland. Several sherds of abraded medieval pottery were recovered from one of the furrows as well a horseshoe, probably of medieval date. The topsoil was noticeably stone-free and contained no post-medieval or modern pottery or glass, suggesting that the land had been under pasture since at least the 16th or 17th century.

Pre-dating the ridge and furrow was an undated pit, two gullies and a possible posthole.
