Full Description

{1} Post medieval brick kiln, now derelict. A rectangular updraught kiln 7m x 4m x 3.5m high, with 8 fire-holes along each long side. The site was cleared in 1969.

{3} A brick kiln is shown here in 1827 and from at least 1849 to 1877 William Foxley operated it. During at least some part of the period he also worked the windmill, and was a coal dealer in the village. It then passed through the hands of Henry Clements and George A. King before eventually becoming the property of the executors to George Savage. In 1885 Clements advertised that he could supply 'common bricks, paving bricks, coping bricks, drain pipes, plain tiles, pan tiles, ridge tiles, hip and gutter tiles, squares etc'. The last reference to the yard was in 1914 when it was being worked by Williams and Son.

[HER note 23/03/2015: Ponds on the site are likely to represent old quarries for clay.]
