Full Description

{1} Ironworks established 1875, only ironworks in the county not to have blast furnaces. Had two rotary furnaces and the aim was to make iron and steel by 'direct reduction'. The process failed due to the unsuitable ore and the works closed in 1882. Samuel Lloyd transferred his interests to the Corby area in 1880 and established blast furances there in 1910.
Towcester Works were on the south side of the Old Tiffield Road about halfway to Tiffield.

{2} Ironworks operated between 1875 and 1882; used rotating furnaces to make steel directly from iron ore.

{3} Trial trench excavation identified traces of a brick-building associated with the ironworks that had been almost entirely removed.

{6} Trenches were excavated in the area of the former ironworks in 1970. In another part of the site a thick layer of fine red powder was identified. A long brick-lined tunnel was also found.
