Full Description
{1}Wharf Lane Brickworks were of fairly large size; closed in 1927;
{2} Brickworks at the end of Wharf Lane have since been demolished and the site is open land located behind modern houses.
{3} Of a fairly large size, was known as Wharf Lane and expanded a great deal during the last 20 years of the 19th century. Wharf Lane probably had a continuous kiln, but not of the characteristic shape of a rectangle with rounded corners, but shaped as a pure rectangle. From as early as 1849 Joseph and George Brown controlled these works, at this time being described as brick and tile manufacturers and masons. By 1877 George Brown had died and his representatives took control, but by at least 1885 the whole complex was taken over by Joseph. Wharf Lane is said to have had a Decauville tramway at the turn of the century which ran up towards the town. Nothing remains of the site now except the actual clay pits. Both works had closed by 1927, the southern of the two having been taken over as a tannery.
