Full Description
{1} The building was in the same location as that shown on Speeds' map and, due to the presence of ironstone blocks in the building's footings, it was initially considered that the building in Trench 3 may have been that shown on the map. The dating evidence for this building, which derives from layers physically and stratigraphically below it indicates that it was constructed during the 19th century. The 1899 Ordnance Survey map shows a row of terraced cottages along the St James Road frontage in this area. [The terrace had been replaced by a factory in the 1950s OS map - C. Walker]
Five lengths of ironstone and limestone walls and an associated floor surface were present. Four walls were aligned north to south and were spaced apart at c. 4m intervals.
{2} The terraced houses were probably constructed during the mid 19th century and are shown on the 1885 OS map. The Ordance Survey map also records two small square structures adjacent to the rear wall. These structures conincide with a cess pit/privy and a coal cellar. A well was found during the excavation mid way between the privy and coal cellar.
