Full Description
{1} Westhay Woods formed part of the Bailiwick of Cliffe, or Clive, an administrative district of Rockingham Forest detached physically from the main part. A boundary description in 1641 defines an area smaller than the bounds described in 1299 and gives topographical information which can still largely be traced today.
The largest components of the Bailiwick were Westhay, Sulehay and Morehay Woods. The woods were finally settled into private ownership free of common rights by enclosure of 1796. The land use remained similar until the C19th.
Westhay was a medieval woodland managed on the coppice sytstem.
