Full Description
{1} Plan showing location of underground mines on p.181.
{2} AA provided a 1951 4 page report copy “from file 28/144 on Irthlingborough Ironstone Mine. It seems that at this time the Ministry of Works had the site reserved for the possible future storage of museum and art gallery exhibits. I was surprised to learn that the two entrances are 2½ miles apart.
The extract provided by AA includes details of the then nature and condition of the mine interior including access, ventilation, services and potential vulnerability to different types of bomb.
{4} There was a big tunnel mouth bearing the date-stone EV 1915 above the brick arch, although the most prominent feature at the entrance to the mine was the notice warning "Safety First". Photo.
