Full Description

{1} Work carried out by by B.Bellamy 1983/4. Evidence from a map of c.1604 in Boughton House and of documents of c.1592 in the NRO shows that this was the site of The Upper Lodge of Geddington Wood which was demolished c.1800. A quantity of post-medieval wares from an extensive area of stone beside the A43 road.

{7} In 1604 it was occupied by Edward Billing, Keeper. This may well be the lodge built around 1592 by Sir Edward Montagu 'to her majesties use and at her highnesses charge'. In 1610, it was said to be 'very ruinous and in great decay'. A map of 1810 shows a considerable range of buildings. One of these buildings was probably a flesh house or venison larder, as great quantities of animal bones were found some years past during the scouring of coppice ditches abutting on Lodge Close. In the 18th century this coppice was known as Larder House Coppice.
