Full Description

{1} Kiln furniture:
A. pedestals, one from Wood Burcote Farm, near Towcester. Illustration.
B. fire bars. Occasionally twigs were incorporated in the clay to give extra strength during the dehydration and early firing phases. An example of this technique was discovered at Wood Burcote Farm, near Towcester, in association with the clay rings described next below.
C. heavy clay rings. Fragments of rings, about 8in in diameter and from 0.5 to 2in thick were found in association with fire-bars and other kiln debris at Wood Burcote Farm. Illustration. There was clear evidence that two or more of these rings had been superimposed, probably before they were subjected to heat. The surviving fragments were roughly hand-made. The excavations at Wood Burcote have yet to provide any clue to their use.

{2} Excavation in 1972-6 uncovered a system of ditched enclosures and pottery kilns dated about AD 40-60. No kilns were in-situ but burnt clay debris included a pedestal, kiln bars and a circular dome plate with central hole. Associated pottery included jars and bowls of late Belgic type
