Summary

Hermitage (site of) (unlocated)

Map

Type and Period (2)

Full Description

{3} A C16th reference to a hermitage

{4} "A dwelling once called a hermitage once stood near the bridge" on the Rockingham side

{6}The small earthwork enclosure at the northern end of the town may prove to be the site of the hermitage. However the old enclosure by the river is a better candidate, being known as Hermitage Close. (IF SO THEN THE NUMBERING OF THE MONUMENT WOULD NEED TO CHANGE TO REMOVE THE DIRECT LINK WITH THE MEDIEVAL TOWN.)

{7} Local enquiries negative, as were examination of place/field name survey (1932) and Rockingham estate maps (both held at CRO Northampton). County history make no mention of a hermitage here and this was possibly a personal name applied by a private owner
