Summary

The Peacock Inn was built immediately after the 1675 fire, but the inn is recorded in documents as far back as 1456. Architectural details of the post-fire building point to Bell of Lynn. Demolished in 1960 and replaced by shops.

Full Description

{1}Williams refers to Finch-Hatton deeds concerning Peacock Inn; property acquired by Roger Salesbury in 1456; he & his son were buried in Greyfriars Church.

{2}Numerous Finch-Hatton deeds relates to 'Peycock'; property variously described.

{3}Isabella Stewart daughter of John Haldane of Lanrick & widow of Jacobite leader Charles Stewart of Ardsheal died in Peacock Inn.

{4} Origins of the Inn go back to 1540. It was also a meeting place for the 18th century Philosophical Society which backed the foundation of the general hospital.

{5} Built in 1456. Demolished in 1960. Photo.

{6} Peacock Hotel built immediately after the 1675 fire and which dominated the east side of the square. It was eleven bays wide with an off-centre carriageway and above it openings with fine details of the kind now associated with the work of Bell of Lynn.
