Type and Period (1)

Full Description

{1} Earthworks of the shrunken medieval village of Great Houghton. A broad hollow way separated the closes on the east of the High Street and the adjacent ridge and furrow. These remains have been largely destroyed by modern playing fields.

{2} To the north-east of the village there is a field with earthworks of the shrunken settlement. Many of the fields also remain ridge and furrow.

{3} Housing development in the 1960s and 1970s obscured the precise extent and nature of any village earthworks except to the north east where there were in 1972 still a few uneven areas of probable house platforms and a fine sunken road (the East Street as mapped in the C17th). These are almost certainly medieval in origin.

{4} The eastern side of a prominent hollow-way, over 2m deep, runs from at least SP79255902 northwards to at least SP79245910.
