Full Description

{1} Archaeological excavation identified three pits close to the south side of the Roman road. One of the pits truncated the roadside ditch indicating that it post-dated the Roman period. It contained wood fragments that had been subject to intense heat, perhaps part of the charcoal burning process. Two further pits were undated. Both contained charcoal and daub rich deposits. Elsewhere this type of pit has been dated to the Saxon period and mark episodes of tree clearance.
