Abstract/Summary

An archaeological watching brief was undertaken on land off Longcroft Road, Little Stanion, Northamptonshire. The investigation encompassed an intermittent watching brief monitoring soil movement and excavation associated with groundworks at the site. The development area includes a known major Roman road and its probable associated ditches. IN addition this region is recognised for its concentration of Iron Age and Roman quarrying and iron smelting. This project revealed a partially preserved Roman road surface, flanked by two ditches. Several undated fire pits were also present and may represent post-Roman woodland clearance. Roman and medieval pottery was recovered during this investigation, including a partially complete Roman flagon.
