Full Description

{1} Manor house. Late C17 extended mid C19 by E.F. Law. Regular coursed ironstone with Colleyweston slate roof. Originally probably 3-unit plan. C17 wing to rear right of 3-window range of 3-light stone mullion windows. 2 C20 doors between windows have moulded stone surrounds with 4-centred arch heads, that to right is probably C19. Ashlar gable parapets and stone stacks at ridge and end. L-shape range attached to left may have C18 origins but appears mainly mid C19. 4-window range of C19 two-, 3- and 4-light stone mullion windows. Large canted stone bay window to ground floor left and central C19 panelled door with strap hinges and moulded stone surround. Bay to right breaks forward as a gabled cross wing with 3-light stone mullion window in apex. Ashlar gable parapets and kneelers and stone stacks at eaves and ends. Plaque in lateral stack to right has inscription "Restored 1865". Interior not inspected but said to contain Court room used for manorial purposes. (Buildings of England: Northamptonshire, p.93).

{2} Undated photo;

{3} OS published name confirmed. The house was almost completely rebuilt in 1865 but some of the walling of the previous house is incorporated into the western part of the house. The history of the house is unknown to me but I believe the earlier house was of 17th C. date.

{4} The present farmhouse, a substantial two-storied house with gable attics built in irregularly-coursed stone, appears to be entirely modern. On the east wall is the inscription 'Restored 1865'. The windows are mullioned and there are four-centred arched door-heads but they are modern - Several houses in the village, dated by plaques to the 1860s have similar detail. No evidence of the previous house was seen and no information as to its history gained. It is not mentioned in J.S. Gotch's 'The Old Halls and Manor Houses of Northants (1936) 'or in his 'Squire's
Homes and other Old Buildings of Northants (1939)'.

{5} No change.
