Full Description

{1} The slag deposits may just be recent dumps of material, but the concentration in the northern part of the field coincides with a large isolated anomoly detected during a geophysical survey. Together these may suggest the site of a furnace.
The survey shows no concentration of medieval pottery but there is a scatter of pottery at the north end of field 3 which extends into field 2. This is unlikely to indicate settlement but the pottery coincides with the northernmost concentration of slag. The relationship of the pottery to the slag deposit to the south is less defined. If the slag deposits and medieval pottery are associated it is possible that iron working occurred sometime between the 12th and 14th centuries, and possible into the 15th century.

{2} Trenches 3 and 4 focused on an area of ferrous material picked up during fieldwalking. No evidence for any ironworking was found and the slag material may well have been introduced by manuring.
