Full Description

{1} Series of outbuildings running along the plot leading back from 12 West Street. The owner of the building reports that prior to its current use as storage the site was utilised as a dairy by the Co-operative Society.

{5} Undated building (Rockingham Forest Project Survey).

{6} The building that is the subject of this recording is a nineteenth century stone building on land at the rear of 12 West Street, Oundle. The building is likely to have been built in 1862 by the Co-Operative Wholesale Society, on land which was directly behind their general store which fronted onto the main commercial thoroughfare of 12, West Street, Oundle.
The building is the largest of an old series of outbuildings (the others are now renovated). It is attached to the rear side of 12 west Street, and runs south down Gallery Lane.
The building is a two-storey structure, constructed of local Oundle stone, coursed with lime-based mortar. It is likely that the building was constructed along with 12 West Street, by the Co-Operative Wholesale Society in 1862 (the date stone still visible on the south wall of 12 West Street). The roof is of Welsh slate, commonly brought in by the Oundle railway in the mid nineteenth century (and used along side Collyweston slate).
The building shows evidence of having been used as a C19th grain store, with grain being sold from a company called .BOCM. There is a chimney, but no evidence for a fireplace. There is evidence for wide barn doors, along with windows and standard sized doors. The west side of the building has three more C20th doors for access.
By May 1958 the roof lights/vents had been removed and replaced with solid asbestos tile, and the adjoining buildings had been changed from pitched to flat roofs.
More details given, along with maps, photographs, plans and elevations.
