Full Description

{1} Owner of the land a John Young from Glasgow commenced work on the site himself in 1905 and production started in 1906. Young seems to have commenced where Newbridge Iron Ore Co, left off between Slipton lane and the lane to Twywell village and later developing quarries west of the lane to Slipton and further north. Production was taken over in c1920 by Cargo Fleet Iron Co.Ltd and by South Durham Steel & Iron Co.Ltd. From 1963 until closure on 24th October 1969. The last record of John Young in respect of the quarry is for 1916 and the ownership reappears under Cargo in 1920. In 1924 closure of the quarry occurred and they were left to the elements. In October 1963 the silence was broken and the quarry reopened sending the quarried ore to Hartlepool and Middlesboerough. The quarries were officially closed on 24th October 1969
