Full Description

{1} A structure, possibly part of a wall or the base of a posthole was found. The age range of occupation spans at least C2nd to C4th AD and may include C1st AD.
During fieldwalking the large amounts of pottery recovered were accompanied by 20+ pieces of limestone, possibly from a building. This survey was followed by the digging of two 1m x 1m test pits in November 2008, the first pit in what appeared to be the centre of the concentration and the second towards the edge, near the footpath. A third, smaller pit was opened adjacent to the first one.
During test pitting a Roman level was detected c.35cm below the ground surface. Pit 1 revealed limestone with some red-pink brick/mortar. Ten limestone building pieces greater than 10cm were removed.
