Monument record 721/0/6 - Iron Age/ Roman pits

A small group of Iron Age and Roman pits were identified during construction of the A43. The two Roman pits were packed with stone suggesting they may have had a structural purpose.

{1} Roman and possibly Iron Age pits. This site probably relates to a suspected Roman settlement lying outside the road corridor.

{2} The presence of a Roman site was suspected when fieldwalking produced a concentration of Roman pottery and a probable late Roman coin. Subsequent trial trench excavation did not identify any archaeological features, but during the watching brief undertaken during the A43 works a group of pits was discovered towards the edge of the road corridor, perhaps at the margin of a Roman settlement lying further to the west. Two of the pits contained three sherds of Iron Age pottery. Two more pits were packed with stone suggesting they may have been structural foundations. Sherds of 2nd-3rd century Roman pottery were found.
