Full Description

{1} A further medieval trackway exists in Arthingworth parish, south-east of Arthingworth Lodge (SP749810). There is a broad medieval track up to 15 m wide, with the usual cambered floor and side drainage ditches, which runs south-east down the hillside between blocks of ridge-and-furrow. At its south end it widens as it approaches the valley bottom. Its immediate destination is the site of the water-mill but it may have been part of a long-distance route that continued to the south past Sunderland Wood and further on as a green lane. At its north-west end it turns sharply north-east and is overlain by the farmhouse. It must have been abandoned by 1767, the year that the Arthingworth fields were enclosed.
