Full Description

{1} On air photos taken in 1947 two other small rectangular ponds are shown. These have now been destroyed.

{2} No medieval features were observed. The modern dump of soil at the west end of the trench was probably introduced to infill a small pond adjacent to the moat.

{3}{4} Modern material filled a substantial cut at least 25m long and over 5m wide. It was impossible to determine the overall form or dimensions of this feature but its base was roughly flat and its northern edge sloped shallowly and unevenly to a depth of c.650mm below the surface of the topsoil. It is likely that the feature is part of one of the ponds recorded by the RCHM. However, the partial nature of the recovered evidence precludes more certain identification of date, form or function.
