Full Description

{1} The corn mill was converted to a pumping house in 1883. The building occupied the southern perimeter of the modern park, extending over the line of the leet and to the north east. It was rectangular in plan, very approximately 20m long by 12m wide, with a small projection to the north west and another into the roadway to the south east.

Site of pumping house, as depicted on early OS plans, and almost certainly also the site of the Victorian corn mill (SP73286640). The building lay alongside the road, with its northern end extending over the leet. The largely ironstone built roadside wall clearly incorporates parts of the lower south side wall of the pumping house/mill, with parts of several door or other openings evident, particularly on the northern elevation. There is good potential for further buried remains of the building(s) extending northwards from the wall. Indeed, at its northern end by the leet, where recent vegetation clearance has been conducted, the top of a brick built arch, constructed of mortared blue engineering and other brick, has been exposed spanning the leet. Two brick walls extend south from the arch across to the stone roadside wall. Remaining vegetation cover and infilling, along with the presence of corrugated tin laid against the north side of the arch, prevent a positive identification, but this may represent the former mill wheel pit.
