Monument record 638/0/115 - Possible medieval house, west of Welton Road

Trial trench excavation identified a floor surface and post-pad dating to the 12th century. These are likely to form part of a timber frame building possibly fronted onto Welton Road.

{1} Trial trench excavation was undertaken; archaeological features were identified in one trench. There was an ironstone rubble surface with a post-pad set into it. To the west was a thin surface interpreted as a floor. On the northern side of the test pit was a layer of orange-brown silty clay; it was not possible to interpret how this layer was formed. Finds included 12th century pottery and a medieval iron knife.

It was not possible to indicate the size or form of the building but the presence of the post pad and the absence of any indication of stone walls would suggest it had a timber frame. The finds would suggest that the building had a domestic function.

The post medieval assemblage is quite small, but indicates that there was also activity at the site in the later 17th- early 18th centuries. Two of the sherds are from the more refined end of the pottery spectrum, and are likely to have been used by some of the wealthier inhabitants of the area at the time.
