Summary

Archaeological evaluation identified a number of undated features as well as ditches dating to the late Iron Age and Romano-British periods, but there was no evidence for a postulated minor road running northwards from Bannaventa, situated c.1 km to the south of this site.

Full Description

{1} Long Buckby SP 607662. Enclosures, photographed from the air by R Hollowell during 1969.

{3} Geophysical survey was undertaken in 1999. The aims of the survey were to locate the putative Roman road and cropmark features and identify any other anomalies of archaeological interest.
Scanning located many anomalies of interest, both grouped and isolated, across the whole of the study area. Detailed survey detected three areas of archaeological potential, comprising linear, curvilinear and sub-circular anomalies which are suggestive of enclosures, possible settlement foci, and trackways. There is no suggestion of a Roman road. The data also contains several broad amorphous anomalies whose nature is unclear, and for which any archaeological interpretation remains tentative.

{4} Archaeological trial trench excavation identified a number of archaeological deposits. Although many were undated, a significant quantity of Iron Age pottery was recovered from the fill of one of the ditches and a single sherd of Roman pottery was recovered from another. It is possible that other, undated, ditches are broadly contemporary. As no evidence indicative of occupation was identified during the evaluation it is likely that these ditches represented field boundaries. The broad amorphous anomalies identified during the geophysical survey appear to be of geological origin.
