Abstract/Summary

A combination of scanning and detailed gradiometer survey was undertaken as part of an archaeological evaluation by Cotswold Archaeological Trust prior to a quarrying and landfill development. The aims of the survey were to locate the putative Roman road and cropmark features and identify any other anomalies of archaeological interest. Scanning located many anomalies of interest, both grouped and isolated, across the whole of the study area. Detailed survey detected three areas of archaeological potential, comprising linear, curvilinear and sub-circular anomalies which are suggestive of enclosures, possible settlement foci, and trackways; there is no suggestion of a Roman road. The data also contains several broad amorphous anomalies whose nature is unclear, and for which any archaeological interpretation remains tentative.
