Roman road running from Kettering to Corby.

Full Description

{1} Possible Roman road suggested by a line of straight footpaths between the Roman settlement at Kettering and the Roman pottery site at Corby, crossing the Gartree Road at SP893876. The OS 2" drawing of 1817 shows the portion between SP882843 amd 893880 as a tree avenue, which weakens the case, but the avenue might have made use of a Roman route.
No evidence of an agger was found during limited field work and air photos (RAF 1950s) add nothing.
No evidence at all found of the route being Roman. The avnue (one of many - 72 miles of them - planted by the 2nd Duke of Montague in about 1740) accounts for the northern (major) part and the southern part in Weekley Hall Wood appears to be no more than a fortuitous falling into line of the eastern arm of a geometric lay-out of rides.
