Monument record 7051/1/11 - Dispersed Communal Site (Site 3), Chipping Warden Airfield

The site of the Second World War Communal Site 3 for Chipping Warden Airfield.

{1} Series of WWII brick and cement buildings. These include at least 4 brick built unroofed blast shelters and at least 2 airfield style wartime buildings. All derelict. At least one concrete base denoting the site of another former building. Other buildings/ structures almost certainly also present. Possible electric sub-station building also noted.

{2} Evidence for the presence of numerous surviving or former structures, the latter represented by concrete foundations or by piles of concrete and other rubble. All surviving structures are in a derelict/overgrown condition. The latter include at least 6 brick built blast shelters, at least 4 Stanton type air-raid shelters and some temporary brick construction huts and one large building of uncertain function. At the extreme SE corner of the spinney is a single derelict wooden hut with brick gable walls.

{3} This area was known as Site 3 Communal Site.

{4} Some surviving structures are visible on lidar imagery.
