Full Description

{1} A single storey open-sided shed of squared coursed limestone with occasional ironstone blocks, that was probably used originally as a cart shelter. The floor is currently covered with straw and the building appears latterly to have been used as an animal shelter. The eastern, southern and western elevations are all fairly plain. However, there is a newly- inserted lancet window or ventilator slit in the south wall and a small straight join low towards the northern end of the western gable. This straight join is also evident internally. Facing the courtyard, the northern elevation is open and supported on two timber stanchions. However, the frontage beam retains three cushions or pads which mark the original positions of the support stanchions. The roof is planked and clad with corrugated iron sheeting. It is carried on trusses comprises of tie beams with King posts and raking struts. These trusses are supported by the pads below the beam on the northern open front of the building. Plans and photos.
Probably towards the end of the 19 century two long ranges were constructed on the north and south sides of the courtyard. It is likely that the southern range was the first to be constructed, and this was an open-sided cartshed, facing north into the courtyard. Cartsheds ideally faced to the north as wooden wagons were damaged by direct sunlight (Barnwell and Giles 1997, 56). This cartshed was four bays wide, with wooden stanchions supporting pads that carried the wallplate of the open frontage.
Alterations were made in the mid-late 20th century. The cartshed was re-roofed, and the arrangement of stanchions supporting its front was altered.
