Full Description

{1} Bridge Street runs southwards through the South Gate to South Bridge. Indicated on the map with the letter P.

{2} Bridge Street runs from the east end of Gold Street to South Bridge. However, by this time the road between St Thomas's and South Bridge is known as the South Quarter.

{3} Bridge Street and the Drapery were connected by a narrow lane which was widened after the fire of 1675. There is evidence for this widening process in the form of contemporary accounds and the evidence of the 1610 Speed vignette.

{4} First mentioned in 1323, the name is derived from its topographical relationship with the river crossing. Lists details shown on 1610 Speed map, 1746 Noble and Butlin map, 1807 Roper and Cole map, 1847 Wood and law map and 1885 OS map.

{7} Drawing of small glass phial, Roman, found in Bridge Street about 1870;
