Full Description

{1} Rescue excavations were undertaken in late February and March 1984. The major medieval structure on site was a stone building of domestic character, measuring 4.9m by 8.3m, which fronted onto a cobbled road to the west. The footings of the walls and many internal features were well preserved. Internally were a hearth setting with a socket which may have held the privot for a fire gate, a feature interpreted as a stone bench, and two stone-lined drains which traversed the floor of the house. The floors were metalled, above a layer of clay used to artificially raised the floor level to that of the road. To the rear of the house the medieval layers have been considerably damaged by major modern intrusions. However, an area of metalling which was interpreted as the surface of the yard. Traces of an adjacent property to the north were recorded but it was impossible to explore it by excavation due to the problem of soil disposal on the site. A short section of boundary wall separating this property from its northern neighbour was also located.
