Full Description

{1} In 1866 the Glendon Iron Co which for a few years previously had been quarrying at Glendon, commenced the manufacture of iron at their Finedon furnaces, which lay alongside the Midland Railway just south of Finedon Station on the east side. A 30-year lease of 25th March 1885 was for limestone over about 148 acres of ground, roughly half on each side of the Finedon to Burton Latimer road. The 1901 OS map shows evidence of quarrying for limestone in the area covered by this lease to the south-west of the road. The Glendon Iron Co.Ltd ceased operations in 1891. [HER mapping is taken from source sketch plan p.132 combined with first edition OS map of the 1880s.]

{1} First edition OS maps of the 1880s show that the area was already 'disused' stone pits by this time. These were perhaps re-opened by the Glendon Iron Co. as part of the 1885 Mackworth Dolben lease for limestone working on each side of the Finedon to Burton Latimer road.
