Full Description

{1} In 1866 the Glendon Iron Co which for a few years previously had been quarrying at Glendon, commenced the manufacture of iron at their Finedon furnaces, which lay alongside the Midland Railway just south of Finedon Station on the east side. At first ore from Glendon was used but very shortly afterwards was supplemented by stone from the immediate vicinity, a standard gauge tramway carrying the material direct to the furnaces for about one mile. This is shown on first edition OS mapping of 1884. Two leases were granted by the Mackworth Dolbens of Finedon Hall; the first 25th March 1885 and for 30 years, was for limestone over about 148 acres of ground, roughly half of each side of the Finedon to Burton Latimer road. The second lease of 24th June 1888 was for nearly 27 years, and was for ironstone in two separate areas: Harlocks and Little Cossical (two fields together of 21 acres), and Eight Acres and Mill Orchard (two fields of 18 acres). The Glendon Iron Co.Ltd ceased operations in 1891.
