Full Description

{1} The survey detected medieval ridge and furrow cultivation orientated north to south across the southern part of the field. The ridge and furrow is just visible on the ground.

{4} A set of furrows still visible as earthworks within the topsoil; three sherds of Midland Blackware pottery datable to the 17th century were recovered. These furrows overlay earlier furrows (6974/0/17) and a plough headland (6974/0/16).

{6} An earthwork survey was undertaken of the ridge and furrow. A headland is aligned across the centre of the field. It is suggested that the degraded remains of ridge and furrow to the north of the headland bank may be earlier in date than those wider ridges to the south. The earlier fields to the north would have been destroyed by the construction of Herne Lodge. The headland appears to sit over the ridges to the north while the furrows to the south are quite pronounced into the bottom of the bank.
