Monument record 977/2 - Possible Medieval manor house site and fishponds, east of Church Lane

Summary
Earthworks located in the south of the village immediately to the east of Church Lane include a raised platform, bounded by a scarp behind Clifden Cottages and, to the south, two small ponds, each with a low dam and a rectangular enclosure to the east. Nothing is known of the history of the site; no buildings are shown on a map of 1859

Full Description
{1}Aerial photography 1981, cropmark close banks identified.
{2} Manor house site and fishponds (?) (SP 668678), lies south of the village, immediately east of Church Lane, on clay sloping south between 145 m and 152 m above OD. The remains fall into two parts. In the north, behind Clifden Cottages (SP 668679), there is a raised platform 40 m square, bounded by a scarp up to 1.5 m high and with a broad ditch or narrow pond on its east side. In the valley bottom below (SP668677) are two small ponds, each with a low dam 1.5 m high, set inside and on the east of a rectangular enclosure bounded by a low bank and ditch. Nothing is known of the history of the site and on the earliest large-scale plan of the village {3} no buildings are shown
