Monument record 5713/1 - Probable Prehistoric Settlement, south of Doddington Road
Please read our guidance about the use of Northamptonshire Historic Environment Record data.
Summary
A geophysical survey and subsequent trial trench excavation identified a sub-square enclosure and associated ditch. No dating evidence was recovered from either feature but the form of the enclosure suggests a prehistoric origin.

Full Description
{1} A series of curvilinear ditches form an enclosure approximately 38m by 34m. Its north-eastern corner lies just beyond the survey area. There is an entrance at its south-west corner, but immediately adjacent to this are a series of anomalies, possibly representing pits. The eastern half of the enclosure has been crossed by a modern service pipe.
A further linear anomaly, possibly a ditch, lies immediately adjacent to the western side of the enclosure. However, this lies on the same alignment as the series of plough furrows and may simply be a magnetically enhanced furrow.
The enclosure displayed relatively strong magnetic readings, possibly suggesting that its fill derived from occupation material.
{2} Archaeological trial trench excavation confirmed the presence of a sub-square enclosure and possible associated ditch. No dating evidence was recovered from the ditches but the form of the enclosure
suggests a prehistoric origin. Two ditches were seen in trench 5. The eastern ditch was aligned N-S, 1.98m wide and 0.5m deep, with a shallow U-shaped profile. The western ditch was aligned NW-SE, 1.05m wide and 0.31m deep, with a U-shaped profile. Neither contained any finds but were identified from their form as a sub-square enclosure and associated ditch of prehistoric date.
Trench 6, which was positioned through the possible southern entrance to the enclosure, did not reveal any archaeological features.
