Monument record 5648 - Site of uncertain Iron Age activity, Paddock Close

Archaeological evaluation identified a small number of Iron Age features indicating a likely settlement

{1} Archaeological trial trench excavation identified a small number of probable Iron Age features. An Iron Age ditch was exposed in three of the trenches; the ditch was aligned north-south and corresponded with an anomaly identified by geophysical survey. The ditch measured between 1.37-2m wide and 0.5-0.6m deep and contained Iron Age pottery, animal bone, and a number of burnt/ heat-fractured pebbles.
A second ditch on the same alignment and 3m to the south was observed in trench 6. It was of approx the same dimensions and also contained Iron Age pottery.

A possible pit was seen in trench 7. It was 1.3m wide and 0.2m deep but its full extent lay outside the trench. It contained Iron Age pottery. A narrow gully and a second pit were also seen. The gully was 2.5m east of and on the same alignment as the Iron Age ditches. It was 0.4m wide and 0.12m deep. The second pit was sub-oval in plan, measuring 0.7m north west to south east and 0.4m north east to south west and was 0.08m deep. Neither feature contained any finds.
