Full Description

{1} “PALL MALL” earthworks. This avenue is now defined by two double rows of trees running from the south forecourt
south-eastward to the edge of the park. The historic air photographs and lidar images show earthwork features between the tree lines. Between the forecourt gates and the Drayton Road a carriage road runs through the centre of the avenue, this is still in use today. The carriage road appears to be set into a low embankment, approximately 10-12m wide. Beyond the Drayton Road the ground between the two inner rows of trees appears to have been graded. Between SP9645 7992 and SP9661 7981 the ridge and furrow expected to have run beneath the path of the avenue appears to have been levelled (see AP no. 9) and from SP9661 7981 and the the ground level seems to have been reduced. The embankment observed north of Drayton Road, but not the extant carriage road continues southward to the park boundary. The lidar data indicates that these features survive as low earthworks.
