Full Description

{1} Trial trench excavation identified a pit which was only partially present within the trench but may have been sub-square in plan with steep sides and a flat base that sloped slightly to the south west. The pit's lower fill appeared to have slumped in from the feature sides. The upper fill contained a large number of both burnt and unburnt rounded stones and a piece of potential hearth or oven furntiure which is likely to be Iron Age or Romano-British in date. A single possible posthole was seen, but was very shallow. It contained no finds.

{2} Targeted excavation was undertaken in October 2012 on a 32m x 31m area adjacent to the pit feature. An oval pit, 0.8m wide, 1m long and 0.2m deep with steep sides and a flat base. It contained numerous pottery sherds from an early Iron Age vessel. A circular post hole 0.4m in diameter and 0.1m deep was also identified. It contained no finds. As the posthole was not associated with any further postholes it does not indicate the presence of a significant structure but may be part of a fence line.
