Full Description

{1} Six linear anomalies situated perpendicular to Townsend Lane. They were interpreted as infilled ditches, possibly marking out tenement plots along the line of Townsend Lane.
Trench 7: Parallel ditches 2.4m wide and up to 0.85m deep. The excavated evidence adds further weight to the provisional interpretation the these features are boundary ditches.
Trench 3: A series of shallow, intercutting ditches. The earliest may have been a boundary, separating the higher terrace from the land falling away to the west. A further five ditches were seen, undatable but stratigraphically later than the early medieval ditch.
A pit 0.9m wide and 0.4m deep, truncated by a later ditch. It contained four sherds of medieval pottery. Two other features in trench 3 were interpreted as pits although, as both extended under the limits of excavation, this cannot be confirmed. Neither contained any finds.

Based on the small quantity of domestic debris recovered and the absence of settlement-type features, it is uncertain whether these plots contained domestic activity.
